SDCC ’15: KFC Goes Nerdy with their Colonel Campaign

Meet the Colonels: Vampire, Werewolf, Unicorn, Alien, Spaceman, Japanese Pop Idol, Furry

In what can only be considered a bold marketing move, KFC is making their presence known at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The campaign is in large geared towards infusing humor to the already established brand, featuring plugs in popular media and visuals in public settings. It officially kicked off in May when the company launched the interactive “Hall of Colonels” website, www.colonelsanders.com. The site is very reminiscent of a Disney themed attraction filled with animatronics, but they are all the Colonel.

The next step in the campaign is more geared towards comic and cartoon fans (aka “Nerds”). Spread out through the downtown Gaslamp area, seven life-sized Colonel statues will be dressed in convention inspired garb: a vampire, a unicorn, a Martian, a werewolf, a Japanese Pop Star, and a furry (yes you heard me). Each one will be WIFI equipped, allowing those in desperate need of internet to get their fix. KFC is encouraging everyone to post selfies with the themed statues using #colonelsanders.

The Colonel Statues will be spread about the Gaslamp area.

Not to be without a Comic-Con exclusive, the fried chicken aficionado will have a limited edition comic book available. The comic will be passed out on July 10^th throughout the Gaslamp by Colonel impersonators. Titled “Colonel’s Adventure,” the book depicts early events in Colonel Sanders’ life that eventually leads to his success, and of course his super power: his world-famous Original Recipe Chicken. The comic will come with his iconic black ribbon tie, and select packages will include a collector’s edition of “Colonel’s Adventure”.

To top it off, Adult Swim and KFC will team up for a meeting of their two biggest characters. The Robot Chicken and the Colonel will be featured together on television, online, and “on-site activations” at Comic-Con. The first televised episode will premiere on Thursday, July 9^th at the Adult Swim Green screening event. Special edition t-shirts will be available then.

Whether or not the marketing campaign will pay off for the company, it’s still worth a look. When and where else can you see the famous Colonel Sanders dressed as a Japanese girl?

My First Comic: “Batman: Shadow of the Bat #52”

Looking back, I guess my comic reading started later in life than most can claim. It wasn’t that I didn’t like comics, but rather never was introduced to them. And my book reading was at a school requirement level at best.

What I loved were toys. That was my thing. I had a whole Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles chest full of action figures and accessories. When the chest began to overflow, my toys spilled out onto my floor and then the carpet. Safe it to say my mom and I were very familiar with Toys R Us.

During one of my frequent visits, I was 11 years old and spending time that weekend with my dad. I was walking down one of the figure aisles when I saw wrapped in hard plastic, hanging from a hook, three comic books. It was a DC collection, with a giant sticker that claimed it was offering a great value. I was curious, and also fascinated with the packaging’s cover art. I grabbed one off the hook and my dad bought it for me.

After taking it home, and spending a good deal of time on the hard shell with a pair of scissors, I laid out the books leafed through them.

Two of them I don’t remember, but the third is still vivid in my mind. It was Batman: Shadow of the Bat #52. My only exposure to the Dark Knight at the time was the Tim Burton movies with Michael Keaton. But this was something different.

The first thing that caught me was the look. The art style was darker than any of the Sunday Funnies, both in color and content. The villain wasn’t any of the one’s I knew about, like the Joker or the Penguin. This was a guy named Narcosis. He wanted to put the whole city into a deep sleep using poisoned milk. For an eleven-year-old kid who loved his morning cereal, this messed with my head. I began to question hard whether I wanted my Frosted Flakes.

Batman and Robin had to intercept the milk before it was delivered to any innocent people, so the story took place in the early hours of the morning. Even I with my limited comic exposure knew then that Batman only operated at the dead of night. At the end, while Narcosis lay in a deep sleep from his own tainted milk, police argued with themselves that since it was daylight, it couldn’t have been the Batman.

Toys R Us didn’t carry comics for too much longer. But by then, I was finding my love for books like Goosebumps. Soon I came in contact with more comics from stores like Borders. My love of the Batman character also grew.

I’ve since ventured to other titles and genres in the years that came. But that one comic will stick with me for a long time I think.

*SUNDAY UPDATE* SDCC ’15 Exclusive Funko Toy Announcements

Welcome back toy enthusiasts to the last installment of exclusive Funko toys for the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con. Well known for their POP! line of figurines, Funko strives to “cover as many beloved licenses and characters as possible to remind every Comic-Con attendee why they fell in love with these stories in the first place.”

Though there might be more Funko toys announced, these are the last of the exclusives for Comic-Con to be revealed. Remember, there will be no pre-buy option this year. If you see any merchandise that you want, then you need to buy them at the booth while supplies last.

Still reeling over the series end of Breaking Bad? Well this Blue Crystal Heisenberg (funny I know) will keep your withdrawals at bay.  Just don’t upset the guy. He looks a little trigger happy.

Steering away from the toy merchandise, Funko will also be selling the wearable variety. These shirts feature some of their best selling figures. Much like their POP! toys, these tees are displayed in fun colorful boxes.

San Diego Comic-Con ’15: Perfect Pack Preparedness

Those who are watching the ticking clock of San Diego Comic-Con know that it’s less than a week away. This is one of the largest and busiest conventions in the world (sometimes just as turbulent and exciting as tornado season). A certain level of preparedness is in order for such an event.

When traipsing through the jungles of an exhibit hall all day, a small backpack of provisions can be a lifeline. Food, water, notebook, a can of Axe body spray; the important stuff. For my convention pack, I use a Timbuk2 backpack (made in M’erica). Their products are always solid, and resistant to wear. Keep the backpack as light as best you can though. At some point in the day you’ll be shelling out some money on some cool toy or print. Leave room for it.

Food and drink lines, much like the rest of the lines, can be quite long. Every minute is precious when sticking to a schedule that consists of panels, signing, and raffles. And if you are lucky enough to find a short one, be prepared to shell out more than you’re used to. Comic-Con consumables are at a premium (Are you serious, $3.50 for a bottled water!?).

A prepared meal in a squish-proof container (lest you enjoy a pancaked sandwich) will go a long way and will be much cheaper. If you’re not one for preparing food, something else quick and easy like beef jerky or power bars is a great alternative. You’ll be thankful for the quick boost of energy when the day drags on.

Pack a reusable bottle so you can fill it at any old water fountain on site when it gets empty. I like my aluminum one I purchased from REI: It’s durable, free of harmful plastics, easy to wash, and great as a bludgeoning-weapon in case of zombie attacks. Companies also make ones that keep the heat in or out, allowing your chosen beverage to stay as hot or cold as you want for hours.

Electronics have become a part of everyday life. Cellphones alone are invaluable tools. Nowadays they can take high-quality photos and video, as well as have access to social media applications like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. It’s important to be able to blast that picture of you and that dreamy Chris Hardwick to all your jealous friends.

For those doing presswork like myself, deadlines can be demanding. A slim laptop or tablet for writing is a must. My weapon of choice is a Microsoft Surface Pro with an optional keyboard. I use it to write notes using the touch screen and type up my articles when I sit down for a break (bring some headphones). So that you aren’t losing anything, keep a USB Flash drive on your person for those important files. For pictures, I use my Nikon SLR camera equipped with an 18-200mm lens (for those up close, personal shots). Something big like Comic-Con will quickly fill up a memory card. Bring an extra, or like myself, upload what you have to your laptop when you can.

The limitations placed on such devices however fall greatly on their battery life. Don’t assume you’ll be able to find any free outlets. If you do find a free one, tread lightly. It’s not a safe bet what voltage a strange port is giving out. Your device might end up a fried paperweight. Invest in a handy-dandy rechargeable battery pack.

Boredom of lines or waiting for that later panel can be an issue to. A handheld device like a Nintendo 3DS or a Ps Vita can make the time passable, especially when you don’t feel like squeezing through the sales floor for the umpteenth time. I find myself usually taking a paperback book.

There might be some other things you may consider packing, but these are the things that work for me. I have enough to be adequately prepared, but not over burdened with unnecessary items.

And lastly, don’t wait till the day before to get this together. You’ll be already preoccupied with getting that thick schedule finalized.

We can’t get enough of the show “Arrow.” Feed the hunger with this ruggedly-handsome Arrow: Unmasked. His arrow will go straight… to your heart!

Pop! Disney: Big Hero 6 – Transluscent Glitter Emoticon Baymax

How would you rate the “kawaii” factor of this toy? The Translucent Glitter Emoticon Baymax from Pixar’s “Big Hero 6” always rates a big smiley face in my opinion.

Pop! Movies: Minions – Gone Batty

Can you imagine you’re life without a minion? Not only do they get the menial tasks done while you are plotting world domination, but they do it in historical style. Joining the large POP! minion collection is this Gone Batty. Wearing a purple cloak and showing off some pointy fangs, this blood sucker should be flying into your hands.

Pop! Disney: Tangled – Frying Pan Rapunzel and Burnt Pascal

Not too long ago, every Disney princess would be the equivalent of a damsel in distress; but not this feisty lady. Frying Pan Rapunzel and Burnt Pascal are ready for a fight. She’s got cookery, and she knows how to use it!

Dorbz: Marvel – X-Force Deadpool

The impending “Deadpool” movie has comic fans squealing with delight. Satisfy your Deadpool cravings with this X-Force Deadpool, dressed in his alternative grey onesie. If you don’t get it… well I just don’t know what this anti-hero will do to you. So, why chance it right?

Dorbz: Guardians of the Galaxy – Mossy Groot

And rounding it up, from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” we have this Dorbz Mossy Groot. We’ve already seen this fella on our list, but instead of the XL we are getting the regular size. Options are good to have.

SDCC ’15: Art of Comic-Con, Sergio Aragones, and Announcement from Mayor Faulconer

It’s one week and counting until the geek fest known as San Diego Comic-Con, a celebration of popular culture in television, comics, movies, cartoons and more, begins. Once known as “San Diego’s Golden State Comic-Con” which took place in the basement of U.S. Grant Hotel’s basement, the then three-day event has become the juggernaut that we all know today.

Much of Comic-Con is self-contained within the convention center. In recent years however, festivities related and unrelated to the C.C.I. have spread outward into downtown. There will be many offsite parties and exhibits coinciding with everything.

The Art of Comic-Con is right now on display at the Downtown San Diego Library. Situated on the 9^th floor, it encompasses artwork spanning the life of the convention. The room is a history of artistry that have either been used for Comic-Con, or featured in their accompanying souvenir guides. Upon entering the space, a collage of artwork used for the Comic-Con guides covers a wall and spills to the floor. As the convention grew, so did the scope of the guides. It gives a glimpse into how things have changed for the convention. Simpler artwork and font begin to evolve, becoming edgier and commanding attention.

The exhibit officially kicked off on June 20^th with a reception featuring legendary cartoonist Sergio Aragones. In his usual fashion, he was more than willing to sign for autographs and pose for pictures.

Going clockwise, more art is displayed. A timeline shows how the logos changed through the years, featuring much of the whimsical toucan. Posters used for hyping big movies and shows that were coming out that particular year are on display, flanking the logo used for Comic-Con today made in Lego bricks. At the end of the opposite wall, a giant mural made in 2009 by Sergio himself to celebrate 40 years of the convention commands the space. And to the right of that, framed in glass is some of the original artwork used for the convention guides. One of my absolute favorites is Dave McKean’s rendition of Morpheus (“Sandman”) used for 2013.

In the center of the room however is probably the most exciting stuff. In class cabinets, over 60 artists are featured; the likes of Sergio Aragones, William Rotsler, Joyce Farmer, and more have their work on display. Work celebrating the rise and existence of Comic-Con. After all, San Diego Comic-Con came into being with the purpose of celebrating the artistry of those that entertain us with their work.

Yesterday, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer used this room as a platform for an announcement. He stated that Comic-Con’s stay has been extended into 2018. Not only that, the mayor assured that there are plans to expand the convention center.

It only makes sense that he’ll do what he can to keep the convention here. It brings millions of direct and indirect money to the city, and with the possibility that the Chargers football team will be relocating, we want to keep it here even more.

Next week as many will be engaged at the convention, we should all keep our ears peeled. It’ll be very likely that the details of Comic-Con’s future and the conventions development will be talked about more in depth. When it comes down to it though, it’s not the money or the tourism that we care about, is it? As fans of various genres, we want to keep the convention here so we may continue to celebrate our love of geekdom as one community.

Pop! TV: Doctor Who – Eleventh Doctor holding Cyberman Head

Does the sight of a British police booth cause you to hyperventilate? This eleventh incarnation of Doctor Who holding a Cyberman head then is the right toy for you. Check him out with his chic purple jacket and debonair hair. *Swoon.*

Pop! Disney: Frozen – Barbershop Quartet Olaf

From Pixar’s “Frozen,” perpetuator of a few sickly cute and catchy songs, comes everyone’s favorite silly snowman Olaf. This Barbershop Quartet Olaf comes complete with a hat, cane, and similarly dressed seagull sidekick.

Pop! TV: The Flash – The Flash Unmasked

Fan’s of the series “Flash” should keep their eyes peeled for this POP! The Flash Unmasked. Be careful not to let this one slip by you.

Hikari: Star Wars – Darth Vader Matte Black

Another Star Wars collectible? No, never. Who could have predicted? Despite there already being a thousand other pieces of Star Wars merchandise however, this Darth Vader Matte Black figure by Hikari looks beautiful. It almost looks like if this famous Sith was made of copper. Better find some room on those already crowded shelves for this toy, which is limited to only 1200.

Hikari: Marvel – Frosted Groot

In this batch of announcements, Hikari will be also coming out with this Frosted Groot. Limited to 1000, it looks like this humanoid plant made out with Olaf. Oh the magic of warm hugs.

Dorbz: Batman – Thrillkill Batman

Nothing better strikes fear into the hearts of men more than a caped crusader in a mask. Well, maybe a caped crusader in full grin and an alternate costume. Dorbz’s Thrillkill Batman sports a red and black costume and a smiling face. A cute, yet disturbing addition to any collection.

Pop TV: Hannibal – Bryan Fuller

And rounding off our releases is this highly limited edition POP! It’s unfortunate that the show Hannibal was cancelled, but you can share the hurt with this Brian Fuller figure. Dressed to kill in his Hannibal like attire, the show’s creator also sports a pair of spectacles and a large kitchen knife. This bad boy comes in only 144 units and will be available during his signing at the Funko booth on Friday, July 10th at 2 p.m. The line for the signing won’t begin until 1p.m., so no early campers please. No other Funko items will be sold during this time.

So if you need or want any of these beauties, best to pick them up at the Funko booth, or see if you can bribe a random person (we do not condone the practice of bribery).

Pop! Star Wars: Princess Leia [Boushh Unmasked]

Though not one of her better remembered ensemble, this Star Wars Princess Leia [Boushh Unmasked] POP! is still pretty fetching. You’ll wish this bounty hunter was looking for you.

Pop! Marvel: Avengers: Age of Ultron – Grinning Ultron

Just when you thought you saw every scary robot to date, this Grinning Ultron decidedly takes the cake. We don’t know why he’s so happy, but let’s hope we never find out. He’s sure to give a few nightmares.

Pop! Hanna-Barbera: Lil’ Gruesome (Red)

Before we know it, we’ll have an army of these Lil’ Gruesome figurines in a rainbow of colors. Joining his green and yellow brothers, this Red Hannah-Barbera character is my favorite so far.

Pop! Marvel: Guardians of the Galaxy – Nova Rocket with Potted Groot

At the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, did you find yourself a little misty eyed? No? Just me? Well… I’m sure this Nova Rocket with Potted Groot will find a way to tug at those heartstrings.

ReAction: Terminator 2 – T1000 with Hook Arms

Any machine that can become liquid, a solid, or take the shape of any person is pretty sweet. This T1000 figure from the Terminator 2 movie is sporting his kick-butt Hook Arms, as well as vintage-esque packaging from when toys were simpler than the crazy articulated ones of today.

Vinyl Idolz: Ghostbusters – Marshmallowed Egon Spengler

And lastly, this Vinyl Idolz from the Ghost Busters movie is a gooey exclusive. Marshmallowed Egon Spengler comes with his ghost containment pack, ghost detector, and white marshmallow splotches. I hope that stuff can come out in the wash.

Don’t work, there’s enough anger and depression in the film to balance this perpetually happy and hyperactive lady.

Pop! TV: Sesame Street – 6″ Flocked Mr. Snuffleupagus

Whether he’s being an imaginary character that only a large yellow bird can see, or a real thing, this 6 inch super sized Snuffleupagus from the much beloved Sesame Street will be materializing to Comic-Con. Who doesn’t want to own a Snuffy?

Once upon a time, there was a toy who wanted nothing but to rule. Now with your help, this Regina from the Once Upon a Time series can rule your figure collection. And look, she’s got an apple for you too as a gift. How thoughtful!

Protecting your crime riddled shelves is this ReAction Arrow Unmasked. Complete with 1970’s style packaging and limited posable action, this fantastic plastic will be a must have.

Dorbz XL: Guardians of the Galaxy – 6″ Mossy Groot

Guarding the galaxy is a big job. Thankfully, this Dorbz XL Mossy Groot is the humanoid plant you’ll be wanting for the job. Featuring a healthy growth of 6 inches, this happy creature will keep everything happily dancing along.

*MONDAY UPDATE* SDCC ’15 Exclusive Funko Toy Announcements

Is the next Star Wars movie already making you hyperventilate? This Chrome C-3PO Gold should tide you over till the eventual release. His golden exterior shows as a near-mirrored shine. Though he isn’t fluent in 6 million forms of communication like his full sized counterpart, he sure looks purdy.
